Underfloor heating is often misunderstood as only being for those with lots of money, but is also sometimes seen as a recent invention.
Imagine you're interested in investing in underfloor heating for your commercial or residential property. Therefore, you may find it of interest to hear a little more about this heating solution's past, present, and future.

The past

The earliest recorded underfloor heating in the west can be found is ancient Rome's hypocaust system. These heating systems were built by the Romans to provide heat for wealthy Roman homes and Roman baths. They are the closest thing to central heating we have today. The system allowed hot air to circulate beneath the floor and through the walls. It was the forerunner of the present day heating systems and ahead of its time.

East China had a similar heating system called heated beds (Kang), which was used from the Qin and Han Dynasties, and had a history that exceeds 2000 years. During the Tang Dynasty, the ancient human living conditions gradually improved, from heated ponds to heated walls. These heated Kang have evolved into mature heating systems. Heated Kang technology utilizes the original and practical construction techniques to improve the quality of life of people in the region, taking advantage of the unique regional climate conditions.

Thousands of years after the Tang Dynasty, the Forbidden City Palace was heated during the winter during the Qing Dynasty. However, this was not water or electric heating, but fire heating. To achieve the effect of floor heating, a special underground channel transmits hot gas to different rooms for heating. The fire in the furnace chamber is ignited at a specific location, and the hot gas is transferred to each room for heating through a special channel.

The present

However, whatever the Rome hypocaust, or Qing Dynasty floor heating methods are no longer applicable today due to difficulty in construction technologies and high cost. A modern alternative to this concept exists, however. Radiant underfloor heating uses the basic concept to heat a room evenly and without the danger of an open flame. Furthermore, this system is much safer and less expensive.

The future

The advantage of underfloor heating:

1、Energy saving

Underfloor heating is a form of radiant heating, which is more efficient than convective heating. This type of heating concentrates heat at a height that is beneficial for human beings. In addition to minimizing small heat losses during transmission, users can also flexibly adjust and control according to their own usage conditions to further reduce energy consumption.

2、 Scientific, healthy and comfortable

Radiant underfloor heating is a type of low-temperature heating. Comparatively to radiators or central air conditioning, it is much more comfortable and evenly distributed. As the indoor surface is evenly heated, the room temperature increases from bottom to top, giving people a pleasant sensation of feeling warm and cool on their feet and heads.

3.Easy to install

Depending on the size of the room, it can be done as a DIY project( reference to Heidelberg underfloor heating system) , if you have any question about the underfloor heating system design and installation, please do not hesitate to contact for advice from us(sales@menred.com).
